Ask the Energy Experts
As part of supporting the industry in helping to move renewable energy forward, enerG is running a
regular feature, Ask the Energy Experts, that poses a topical question involving renewable energy to
industry representatives.
In this issue, we asked our experts this question:
Q:
What important actions could the renewable energy industry take, and
why, to make sure the public stays onside with renewable energy?
Rick Gentry, Executive Vice President, QuickBOLT, a Division
of Quickscrews International Corp:
“The renewable energy industry made big strides extending the ITC credit. That is
an important feature when deciding to install solar on your home. The other factor
that carries a lot of weight to the decision of investing in solar on your home is net metering
. The industry should be working with the utility companies to try and increase
the value of net metering to the homeowner. This feature will reduce the payback
time on home solar installs. Lastly, reduce import duties on panels made in other
countries so that there are not additional costs that drive up prices.”
Jeff Myles, Marketing Manager, Rolls Battery Engineering:
“Focusing on the immediate and long-term financial savings for homeowners and
lowered environmental impact are two key ways to gain and maintain public interest
in renewable energy. Providing straightforward information on available incentive
programs and financing options via mainstream media will attract homeowners
seeking methods to reduce their utility costs while still enjoying the lifestyle they’ve
become accustomed to. Environmental impact is also important. Chosen for use in
most residential applications, lead-acid batteries continue to be the most recycled
consumer product in the world—a rate of 99.3+% in the U.S.—and follow closedloop
recycling programs to offer affordable long-term, safe, and sustainable energy
storage options.”
Kyle Wetzel, Vice President of Blade Services, SkySpecs:
“It is imperative that the wind industry take a proactive approach to maintenance
to ensure high reliability as the fleet ages. Maintaining the reliability of wind-powered
electric generation is critical to ensuring continued public confidence in wind energy
as the industry evolves to becoming the leading source of new power around the
world.”
